12-Module Program
At Tarpon Springs High
School, Lucia Arnold used Building Math Power’s 12-Module Program with
freshmen whose incoming stanines were 3 and 4. She and her
students used the program for 90 minutes a day for two consecutive
years. At
the end of their sophomore year, 87.5% of the students passed the
FCAT.
Lucia writes, " I compared my students’ math
scores with their reading scores, and many more of them did not pass
reading but were able to pass the math. I attribute that to
the thinking processes they have developed by using BMP. If students
can reason their way through the questions and process the answers given,
they can pass FCAT. That’s what my students were able to do.
My students have learned to know, understand, and apply mathematical
concepts and procedures --- reasoning to arrive at conclusions
on their own. They can work together and communicate to each
other ideas that they have developed in a manner that others in the
room understand. They volunteer to teach each other. They enjoy
coming to class; absenteeism is very low. My students have learned
to take responsibility for their learning." |
"Building Math Power had a phenomenal impact
on student achievement at Benson High School during my tenure there
as principal. Standardized test scores rose dramatically in the first
year of operation, and whenever I went into a math classroom, students
were engaged in hands-on, practical, high level learning. The faculty
was empowered by this program to implement the NCTM standards in a practical
way with impressive results in what students know about math and are
able to do. The math faculty felt they had a vehicle to bring about
math understanding on a deep level for all kids.”
-- David Wing, high school principal |
“
Building Math Power is an engaging, well-designed, thorough mathematics
curriculum / program based on best practices and state and national
standards. It exemplifies what ideal mathematical instruction can and
should be. In Building Math Power, students learn because of the
explicit connections and re-examination of concepts that are learned
through construction of knowledge. The format is activity-based and
relevant to my students. Students are successful in Building Math Power
because they ‘experience’ mathematics.”

“ Building Math Power
explains it our way, the way we understand it.” --Luisiana
Valenzuela, 9th grade student |
If schools are serious about
addressing national and state mathematics standards, they should
look at Building Math Power.”

“Students in this
program are busy and involved. Many of them, for the first time,
believe they can do the
math. The
program goes beyond just math to address issues that belong to all
disciplines: high expectations, effective work skills, higher level
thinking, writing
across the curriculum, student responsibility for learning.

Stephan Knight,
high school principal |
“I especially like the questions the program
asks. They’re the questions we used to ask ourselves as math teachers
but never dared ask our students."

former high school math teacher, Director of Peak Learning Systems |
" The book is like
if the teacher was there explaining it all."

Module 0: The Power of 10
“It is truly amazing to watch the growth in
students’ understanding of place value as they work in Module
0. . . . The light bulbs are turning on.”
-– Jean Tsuya, middle
school math teacher |
S.T.A.R. Academic Center (AZ)
used Module 0 for freshmen students who had failed 8th grade. On the
9th grade Stanford test, 69%
scored average or above in Problem Solving Strategies; 89% scored average
or above in Geometry from an Algebraic Perspective; 74% scored average
or above in Functions, Geometry from a Synthetic Perspective, and Trigonometry.
Writes Pam Cornell, the school’s director, “With these
amazing results from Mod 0, I can only imagine what will happen as
we fully implement
Modules 1-4.” |
“I have seen remarkable learning success with
Module 0. In our preparation class for pre-algebra, every student except
one earned an ‘A.’ I think of one student in particular who
had never passed a math class in middle school. She received an A. And
these are not ‘easy’ A’s. They are definitely earned.”
--Jean Driescher, charter school director |
I have used the Mod 0 text
and related materials with my Adult Basic Education classes for 8
months. I have found that
students
with conceptual gaps in their mathematical education benefit tremendously
from this program. From the first lesson, I am amazed by the number
of ‘light
bulb’ moments and bridges that are made for students. Procedures
they learned many years ago suddenly have new meaning. This translates
to actual understanding of the concepts that lead to procedures, the
skill most beneficial to using math successfully in our every day lives.
I am excited to use Mod 0 with my adult students. It takes the mystery
and anxiety out of math like no other program or book I have ever used
before.”
-- Kristain Johnston, adult education instructor |
Above & Beyond!
“Side effects of using the Above and Beyond math program: high-achieving
students, successful teachers, thrilled parents, and amazed administrators.”
